🌿 Feeling Called to Reiki? Here’s What to Know About Your First Attunement

ree

Attunement—also known as Initiation—is a sacred and often mysterious ritual in Reiki practice. If you're new to Reiki, you might be wondering:

  • What happens during an attunement?

  • Is it safe?

  • Who can perform it?

  • How would I benefit from it?

These are natural and common questions. At the beginning of any spiritual journey, curiosity and doubt go hand in hand.

✨ A Glimpse Into the Origins

The system of Reiki was founded by Usui Mikao, a Japanese Buddhist and spiritual seeker. Over 100 years ago, Usui embarked on a 21-day solo retreat to Mount Kurama in Japan, where he fasted and meditated. On the final day, he experienced a profound energetic awakening—feeling a powerful flow of energy in his body and hands. This moment was the seed of what we now know as Reiki.

Today, you don’t need to undergo a long and intense spiritual retreat to access this energy. Thanks to the system Usui created, Reiki can be passed on through attunements, making it accessible even to beginners.

While some people do develop the ability to sense and work with energy through years of practice like yoga, tai chi, or meditation, Reiki attunement offers a more immediate path.

🌟 What Happens in a Reiki Attunement?

A Reiki attunement is a deeply personal and powerful energetic ritual. It’s not just symbolic—it's a real energy transmission. The process opens up your energy channels, reconnecting you with the universal life force (Rei-Ki) that has always been within you.

This 15–20 minute ritual is given by a Reiki teacher as part of your training. It’s often a quiet, meditative experience that can be very healing. Some people feel emotional relief, physical sensations, or spiritual clarity. Others may simply feel calm, centered, or deeply relaxed. Just like a Reiki session, each attunement experience is unique.

What’s important is that after the attunement, you are able to begin practicing Reiki immediately—feeling energy in your hands and starting to understand how it flows.

💫 What Is (and Isn’t) Changing?

A Reiki attunement doesn't give you something new, or change who you are. It simply helps you become more aware of the life energy that’s already flowing within you. Your personality remains the same, but your sensitivity and connection to energy may deepen.

🌱 How to Prepare for an Attunement

There are no strict requirements. However, we usually recommend:

  • Avoid alcohol the night before

  • Get a good night’s sleep

  • Arrive grounded and open

During the workshop, you’ll also be guided through grounding and balancing practices to support your experience.

🔑 Who Can Give a Reiki Attunement?

Any certified Reiki Master who has learned how to give attunements can initiate students. However, I recommend choosing a Reiki teacher who offers more than just the attunement itself.

Look for someone who:

  • Has deep personal experience with Reiki

  • Teaches all aspects of the system, not just techniques

  • Offers a structured and progressive approach to learning

  • Creates a safe and supportive learning environment

Good training, paired with consistent personal practice, lays the foundation for meaningful and lasting results.
